New Atlantis ficlet

Apr. 8th, 2006 | 04:10 pm
mood: nervous
music: Crosses - José Gonzáles

Er, hello! I know I haven't posted in many, many months. Sorry about that. Anyway, I woke up this morning and wrote a little lantis fic. My gosh, a fic. I know.

My hands are up - this it very much inspired by a wonderful short story called 'In a Tub' by the brilliant Amy Hempel.

Anyway, here it is. It's very short. And it's untitled, so if anyone has an idea for a title let me know.

"The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino." ~Joe Fox, You've Got Mail.

I ADMIT IT! I am a Starbucks h0r. I'm not proud of it. *sips grande hazelnut latte* I see it as one of my main anti-capitalist/ anti-consumerism failings. Oh, and ALL OF THE SHOES.

For All
Ah to be alive
on a mid-September morn
fording a stream
barefoot, pants rolled up,
holding boots, pack on,
sunshine, ice in the shallows,
northern rockies.

Rustle and shimmer of icy creek waters
stones turn underfoot, small and hard as toes
cold nose dripping
singing inside
creek music, heart music,
smell of sun on gravel.

I pledge allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the soil
of Turtle Island,
and to the beings who thereon dwell
one ecosystem
in diversity
under the sun
With joyful interpenetration for all.
~ Gary Snyder

I was just watching my beloved Black Books DVDs when I remembered I had typed out one of the extra scene thingies for the poor aussies who didn't get the shiny extras on their Series 3 DVDs. I posted it to the Black Books comm, like, a year ago, but not here. Which is a long way of saying.. er, here is the transcript of Bernard's Letter:

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it. (~Ellen DeGeneres)

First there was this:

"The result of the US election will affect the lives of millions around the world but those of us outside the 50 states have had no say in it - until now. In a unique experiment, G2 has assembled a democratic toolkit to enable people from Basildon to Botswana to campaign in the presidential race. And with a little help from the folks in Clark County, Ohio, you might help decide who takes up residence in the White House next month. Oliver Burkeman explains how."

Then this:

"Dear Clark County voter: three prominent Britons reach out."

And then this:

"Last week G2 launched Operation Clark County to help readers have a say in the American election by writing to undecided voters in the crucial state of Ohio. In the first three days, more than 11,000 people requested addresses. Here is some of the reaction to the project that we received from the US."

Two weeks today until the election. *is scared*

poem dealie

Oct. 16th, 2004 | 12:49 am
mood: sleepy
music: Blues Run The Game (live) - Counting Crows

When you read this, post a poem in your own lj. (Last seen with [info]nandamai.)

Ask Me

Some time when the river is ice ask me
mistakes I have made. Ask me whether
what I have done is my life. Others
have come in their slow way into
my thought, and some have tried to help
or to hurt: ask me what difference
their strongest love or hate has made.

I will listen to what you say.
You and I can turn and look
at the silent river and wait. We know
the current is there, hidden; and there
are comings and goings from miles away
that hold the stillness exactly before us.
What the river says, that is what I say.

William Stafford

I first read this poem thanks to [info]runpunkrun.

Ah, what a wonderful day of golf. Yes, my friends, Europe totally thrashed the USA in the opening day of the Ryder Cup.

Winning is always nice, but when you beat the Americans on your way there, victory is just that bit sweeter. ;p

Obviously there’s still everything to play for. Don’t count your chickens and other clichés. But whatever happens, today was beautiful.

(p.s. I’m going away for a bit and will be sans internet. See you lovlies when I return. Have a great weekend!)

Okay, I was just reading the Altantis twop board/forum thingy (even though they're all mean to Weir over there *thwaps*) and someone mentioned who Sheppard sounds like. It's Owen Wilson! Yes yes. That's it exactly! I cannot tell you much this has bugged me. I knew he reminded me of someone but I coudn't figure out who it was.

*sigh* Such a relief.
